The Benefits of Meditation after Reading Spiritual Stories

Tags: , , , , ,

For many people who are reading and studying spiritual stories and spiritually based lessons, meditation after reading will work to help them gain a deeper understanding for the material. Setting a quiet time for meditation afterward lets your mind center and focus on the message of the story.

By not allowing other distractions to enter, you can fully absorb what you have learned. It is best to meditate on a spiritual lesson immediately after reading it. Otherwise, the message might be lost in the sea of mundane tasks you normally do. You can get a deeper understanding of the true lesson in the story by allowing the words, thoughts, and inspiration to penetrate deep into your conscious mind.

Meditation is not only a time of quiet reflection, it is a time to let your thoughts sort out what is important from the more mundane realities of life. This type of concentration will give you a way to consider the larger meaning of the spiritual stories and lessons as they relate to your own life. It may seem difficult to grasp some of the ideas at first, but if you only allow your mind and spirit a quiet and meditative moment to contemplate, you’ll find that they are not that difficult to understand.

Meditation helps people to be more in touch with their inner spirit. In fact, more and more religious organizations are now incorporating many elements of meditation into their services. With time, your consciousness will become a bigger part of your life as you learn how to welcome enlightened thoughts and centered behavior through meditation. For some people, meditation itself allows all of the cares and frustrating distractions to be set aside for a short period of time, and they can concentrate fully on the matter at hand.

When you focus and seriously meditate on a lesson, the subconscious areas of the mind help you put things into better perspective and allow you to glimpse ideas that are very subtle in nature.

The Law to Success: Relationship Mastery & Influence

Tags: , , , ,

We all want better relationships. Whether those relationships are with family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, a desirable potential lover, whoever we deal with, we want the best possible relationship with them. And one of the best ways to have the best possible relationships with other people is to understand the difference between influence and control. Most people don’t realize the distinction between the two, but it makes huge difference in relationships. Keep reading to find out why.

Every time you interact with someone, you influence them, and they influence you. If you think about this for a moment you’ll realize it is true. Anything you do or say with or to another person influences them. It may make them happy, or sad, or confused, or angry, but every time with interact with anyone, both of us are affected in some way. Even if (particularly if) you ignore someone completely, that response affects how they think and feel. So the first thing to realize if you want to master the art of having great relationships is that every time you interact with someone, you influence them in some way, and they influence you.

The other term we want to discuss is control. If you think about this one, you really have no control over anyone else. You may be able to pressure someone into doing what you want (to influence their behavior), but if they really don’t want to do it, you can’t control them. No one can really force someone to do something if they are really determined not to do it. In other words, you constantly influence everyone you interact with, and they constantly influence you. But neither party can actually force the other to do something they are dead set against doing.

Too many of us try to control others and force them to do what we want them to do, instead of influencing them to want to do what we want them to. In the most classic example, you can’t force someone to be your friend, and trying to do so will likely be a negative influence on them. But at the same time, you can use your interactions with others to try and influence them to see things your way, and perhaps do what you want them to do. If we learn to influence people better, our relationships are sure to be better and we’re more likely to get the results we want than trying to control everything is going to get you. Most people never seem to learn the difference between influence and control, but if you do, relationship mastery and all the benefits it brings will be within your reach.

Understanding the roles influence and control play in any relationship is only a fraction of what you will learn in the Relationship Mastery portion of the Law to Success Mastery program. If you would like to learn more, please visit the Law to Success Review at http://TheLawToSuccess.com/

Thinking Outside The Box - Try This

Tags: , , ,

Ready to start thinking outside the box? You hear the expression enough, but what is the box, and how do you get outside of it with your thinking? Start with the following technique.

The Metaphorical Box

To play with the metaphor a little, imagine that you are actually in a box. Written on the cardboard walls around you is a description of the world outside. This may be a very detailed and accurate description in some ways, giving you a good idea what the world is like. You may even use this knowledge to come up with some ideas that could be useful in the outside world.

Of course the world is larger and more complex than any description can capture - no matter how detailed. Obviously, as long as you stay inside this box, your thinking will be very limited. If you want to really know the world, and if you want your thinking about it to be more productive, you need to be outside the box.

Getting Outside The Box Of Our Thoughts

All of us are “in the box” at times. The “box” consists of our habitual and limiting ways of thinking and solving problems. This is easiest to understand with a simple example.

Suppose Mary hates her boss. He has been unfair and rude. Her first approach to this problem was to go above his head and complain, in the hope that he would be fired. It didn’t work.

She thought about transferring to another department, or perhaps even quitting. That just made her angry. Why should she quit, when he is the one that causes the trouble? Then she started to think about revenge. The idea made her smile, but she knew it would only mean bigger problems.

Mary decided that her thinking wasn’t very productive, and she needed to start thinking outside the box. How did she go about this? First, she identified some key elements about her approach - some assumptions she was making -  and she challenged them.

She realized that she was assuming that her boss was the problem. You could say that this was part of the description written on the inside of her box. It may have been accurate, but it wasn’t helping, so she asked the question, “What if I was the problem?” What was she doing that she could do differently? Now she was looking outside the box.

Right away she saw that she was dwelling on his rude behavior and unfair decisions. If she could ignore those, she realized, she actually still liked her job. She stopped focusing on his behavior and found that things improved for her at work.

Also, she was making herself a target, she realized. Her visibly getting upset seemed to make her boss act even worse. She started answering his rudeness by smiling like she knew some secret. He seemed confused, and he stopped making as many rude comments.

Then, she realized that in her box, this situation was painted as a battle between him and her. Did it have to be a battle? she asked, challenging her approach. What if instead she tried to help him? She laughed, and mumbled to herself, “Yeah, help him find another job.” Suddenly, this seemed like a good idea. She found his resume and secretly sent it to a corporate headhunter. A month later he had a job offer and he left for good. She was even promoted to his position.

There are a lot of ways to start thinking outside the box, but one of the first to try is to challenge your assumptions.

A Guest’s Guide to Wedding Gifts With Meaning

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Weddings are perhaps one of the toughest events when it comes to gift giving. A lot of people just give money, and of course the Bride and Groom appreciate it. But many guests prefer to remain more true to wedding traditions and provide a more meaningful Wedding gift to the couple.

Wedding gifts were traditionally given to the Bride and Groom as a way to help set up their household. The couple had typically been living with their parents prior to the marriage and needed to start from scratch when they got married and set up a home.

Today, of course, many couples are older and have been living on their own for a while. They have already accumulated many of the household items they need to operate, and are even faced with the task of combining two households into one. So simple kitchen and dining household items, while traditional Wedding gifts, aren’t as necessary as they once were.

It is possible, however, to stay true to tradition by selecting a decorative item for the Bride and Groom’s new home. By choosing something that is unique, meaningful and matches the couple’s tastes, you will be giving a gift that will be displayed in their home and provide memories for a lifetime. One great option is to choose an unusual wall or shelf cross as a reminder that they are not in their marriage alone.

Bride and Grooms have traditionally registered at major department stores as a way of spreading the word as to what they need as gifts. While still fashionable, Bridal registries are losing popularity with guests for a number of reasons. For one, many guests feel that their gifts will get lost in the mundane – what couple will really remember years from now who gave them that set of sheets?

But even if you prefer not to give a gift from the Bridal registry, you might want to check it out to get an idea of the styles that the Bride and Groom like as well as what type of things they can use. Then, you can use that information and put your own unique spin on it to give a gift that the couple will treasure. For example, find out from their registry the colors they have chosen for their bathroom decor, then choose a unique glass decanter for the bathroom counter to complement their theme.

Probably the most troubling part of gift giving at Weddings is knowing how much to spend. There are lots of theories to calculate this number, but the bottom line should be never spend more than you can afford. You can be assured you were invited to share in the couple’s celebration, not because of the size of your gift. Any couple worth giving a gift to in the first place will not sit around after the big day valuing their haul.

There are creative and meaningful gifts available in a wide variety of price ranges. If price is a concern for you consider a lovely pewter keepsake box or glass candlesticks. The Wedding is an important and meaningful day for the Bride and Groom and the goal is to find a gift that is truly suited to them, regardless of the cost.

Easy Steps Towards Preparing For Wedding Cake

Tags: , ,

There are so many different things that you need to take care of when it comes to your wedding, but what about your wedding cake? You do have the option of making your own wedding cake, and not only would this save you some money but it will be a lot of fun too. Especially if you are interested in baking and cake making and that sort of thing, making your own wedding cake may be a great idea.

How To Do A Wedding Cake

So if you have decided that you do in fact want to make your own wedding cake, you need to start by deciding what sort of cake you want to make. What style do you want the cake to be and what color, what size? These are questions that you are going to have to answer before you can even get started on your cake.

Now you start with the support of the cake, which is the bottom. This has to be sturdy, just as with the foundation on a house, otherwise your cake is not going to be properly supported. The next step is the structure of the cake. To make dowel supports for a tier on the cake, you want to carefully push a ¼-inch thick dowel into the center of the bottom tier and mark the height of the cake on this dowel.

Another issue that you are going to have to figure out is the decorations that you want to use on the cake. You can pick and choose from a variety of decorations for toppings on the cake and around the sides. Just make sure that you stick with the same general color palette. You don’t want to start mixing and matching with too many different colors because then the cake is going to look messy.

Now that you are finished making the wedding cake, make sure that you choose the perfect wedding cake topper to go on top of it, just to add that finishing touch that is going to make it exquisite.

It will feel really good knowing that you made your own cake, but just ensure that you leave enough time to do it because this is not the quickest task that you are going to have to deal with for your wedding and you are going to need to have enough time to make your cake if this is something that you want to do.

Is Mother’s Day Weekend Just Another Weekend?

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

So there I am, folding the second of three baskets of laundry, clothes piled all around me on the dining room table. Kids watching tv, husband off somewhere. Just a normal Friday evening, the only thing distinguishing it from any other Friday is that it is the start of Mother’s day weekend. The folks on radio and tv all day seem to think that is a big deal, but the news has not reached my family’s ears yet.

My husband walks through the room, mumbling under his breath. I hear him in the kitchen opening the freezer, mumbling some more. Then “Sue, can you take this out to the freezer in the garage?”

Just a reminder to anyone who missed this…I am folding laundry, my kids are relaxing (well, more than relaxing, kind of sprawling) across the couch, clearly able (but probably not willing) to pitch in and help. Why, I wonder, am I the choice to take something out to the garage? For that matter, why can’t hubby?

So I ask. “I can’t” he replies, “I have to go get ice…” from the freezer, in the garage. Huh.

By this time the laundry is abandoned. I’m really bewildered. And headed toward angry. So I go into the kitchen to speak my mind, but I can’t because that terribly annoying, insensitive, sweetheart of a husband I married 20 years ago has already figured out the flaw in his logic and is standing there, smiling sheepishly. Too cute to be angry at.

Fast forward a few hours. “The dog stinks,” I tell the room. “He must have a bath tomorrow or I leave home.” There must have been a sound vacuum in the room, because not one person answered me. Seriously, others were talking to each other, but anything I said seemed to be sucked into some kind of void. “I mean it – this dog will have a bath.” I try again, sounding a bit frantic .

And,as if in slow motion, they pull their attention to me, confusion evident in their eyes. Did I say something? they seemed to ask. Good, at least I’m not in the twilight zone or purgatory or something. Just home, having a typical Friday.

And you know, I don’t even care that much. Except on this, Mother’s Day weekend, it really brings to light the difference between moms and everyone else. I mean, birthdays and father’s day celebrations seem to start on the Wednesday before and go all week long. But Mother’s Day weekend begins with a real thud…no recognition at all.

I know, it won’t be forgotten altogether. On “the day” we will have a barbecue (which I will probably buy the food for, and prepare the sides, and clean up after), and the kids will present me with the gifts they made in class, which I will love. I”ll get hugs, and kisses and feel really special for an hour or two. Until all returns to normal…and honestly that will be enough.

Because I think when it comes right down to it, moms are different than the rest of the world. God gave us that special sauce that allows us to keep on keeping on, to smile and to get it done, without needing the fanfare that other people need. A hug here, a smile of appreciation there, are all that’s necessary to shower our love on our family year round.

And, I have to admit that we moms are not perfect. That laundry I was folding tonight? I never did get it done, and we’ll probably have to clear it up Sunday to use the table for the big Mother’s day meal. But, I say So what? Where there is laundry and stinky dogs and frustration there is a family. And where there’s a family there’s love. And that’s just where we moms should be.

Do I Have to Eat Humble Pie to Be Humble?

Tags: , , , ,

“If only I had a little humility, I would be perfect.” This quote by Ted Turner is the summary of how many people think, in a society that has become increasingly committed to independence, competition and success. As Christians, we are instructed to turn the other way and “humble” ourselves to the Lord. As Christian Americans, that is a pretty tough command to obey.

What does “humble” mean? A google search reveals definitions that are all over the board, but mostly negative, including “low or inferior,” “broken and subdued,” even “cause to feel shame.”

How can God, who is a loving God, ask for that? I imagine that, like me, many Christians find that hard to believe.

Yet, the Bible is full of passages praising the humble.

“For the proud will be humbled and the humble will be honored” Luke 14:11.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” Matthew 5:5.

Does God really want us to be bullied in this life, content to be walked on now in exchange for eternal glory?

The word “humble” is used so infrequently these days, and the problem is that we tend to focus on the modern, worldly definitions of the word, which are quite unappealing. The bible’s definition is much more positive.

The compilers of The Message, a modern, narrative translation of the Bible which tries to interpret it’s message in today’s language, records Luke 14:11 much differently: “…If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.”

I like what Archbishop William Temple said about the topic: “Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself at all.” This better explains to me what God is asking of us when he commands us to be “humble”.

Rather than a directive to roll over and take it or to let everyone walk all over us, God asks that we dedicate ourselves to His service, to recognize our gifts and our strengths, and to use them as He directs, not for our own objectives. To stop thinking about ourselves at all, and to commit to His will.

God’s instructions to be humble are actually an invitation by him to be proud of our abilities and to use our gifts for His glory. And rather than worry and fret like the world does about finding our purpose and realizing our potential, we can be stress free in the knowledge that God is in control, he loves us, and wants the best for us. What a freeing gift he gives us if we just choose to accept!

“So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you.” 1 Peter 5: 6-7.

Meaningful Gifts For the Christian Graduate

Tags: , , ,

Graduation is an exciting time, one where the graduate celebrates all the hard work they have done and eagerly anticipates their next steps. Whether it is high school, college, or even higher honors, the graduate’s loved ones want to honor the student by giving them a great graduation gift.

What makes a good Graduation gift? Many will lead you to believe that if you can’t give a big ticket item like a car, trip, or large amounts of money, the graduate will be disappointed. Perhaps this is true in some cases, but most graduates are pleased to receive a less expensive, but meaningful gift.

Since it is a time when most young people will be turning a new page in their lives, be it college, a new job, or a new home, graduation is the perfect time to give a gift that will last and can move with them through every chapter of their life.

Christians should consider giving a gift that will remind the young graduate of their faith during the years ahead. There will be many times throughout their lives when they will feel alone, inadequate, frustrated and disappointed, and a positive reminder of God’s enduring love will be appreciated during these times.

What are some affordable Graduation gift ideas to give the young Christian graduate on their big day? A cross shaped wall hanging from sturdy metal or pewter is a piece they will take from home to home and will provide a sense of stability throughout their life. A study bible, of course is always a great idea. How about a business card holder or trinket box decorated with crosses or other Christian symbols? Finally, candle holders, perfume bottles, or other daily use items are great Graduation gift ideas to give that will stand the test of time.

The key thing to keep in mind when choosing a Christian Graduation gift is less how much it costs, but rather how thoughtful the gift is, and how it will reinforce the graduate’s faith for years to come. If you can choose a gift that can do that, you will provide a gift that will be cherished for a lifetime.
